Description

“First grade is one of the most important for a child on the road to reading, building on the foundation provided in kindergarten” (Shaywitz 223). After students have broken the reading code, the mechanics of reading are next. At the beginning of the year, first graders are ready to read and in a year, they are readers with a vocabulary of about 400 (Shaywitz 224) In this class, we utilize decoding methods that are clinically proven and evidence-based, designed to empower and equip all learners. Readers learn to break down the English code, using the tools they need to become confident readers. Our program is designed to meet the needs of all learners, including those with special needs such as dyslexia.

Our Orton-Based Program:

Orton-based phonics is an approach to teaching reading that focuses on the individual needs and strengths of learners, particularly those with reading difficulties. Unlike traditional phonics programs, which often rely on rote memorization and repetition, Orton-based phonics uses a multi-sensory approach to engage all the senses in the learning process. This approach combines visual, auditory, and kinesthetic strategies to help students understand and decode words more effectively. By incorporating activities such as tracing letters in sand or using manipulatives to build words, students can engage with the material in a way that makes sense to them.

Orton-based phonics also emphasizes the importance of teaching phonemic awareness, or the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds in words. This skill is absolutely crucial for developing strong reading skills and is often overlooked in traditional phonics programs.

By incorporating these techniques, our Orton-based phonics program provides a more comprehensive and effective approach to teaching primary reading skills. Students are able to develop a strong foundation in phonics while also building confidence and a love for reading.

Learners with Dyslexia or Reading Trouble:

Each learner is unique and requires individualized instruction. We consider the specific needs and strengths of all learners. This is why our class sizes are very small. If we discover that your learner needs more intense instruction, we will let you know and will advise you to move to 1-1 tutoring. We individualize instruction to the needs of our learners.

Teachers: At Lemons-Aid Learning, we recognize the vital role of teachers in delivering exceptional education. Our Orton-based curriculum empowers educators to become courageous learners themselves. While many teachers lack formal training in English orthography, phonetics, and the science of reading, we’re bridging this gap. Our ongoing training and professional development equip teachers to navigate the intricacies of our curriculum effectively. Meet Mrs. Ali and Mrs. Freeman, teachers offering this course.
