Description

By the end of first grade, children should be able to spell many short words accurately. This accomplishment doesn’t “occur by chance; [it is] made possible by well-structured and systematic activities that draw the child ever closer to understanding how words work” (Shaywitz 224).

Spelling involves the ability to segment a word into its component sounds (phonograms) and then transform each of those sounds into letters. In this class, learners benefit from Orton-based spelling to improve spelling skills. Teachers offer in-depth instruction on spelling rules and patterns, helping learners understand how language works and how to apply it to their writing.

What is Orton-Based Spelling and Why Does it Work?

Orton-based spelling is an approach to teaching spelling based on the Orton-Gillingham method, a highly effective, scientifically proven approach for teaching reading and writing skills to individuals with dyslexia. The methods focus on decoding the English code, teaching students to break down words into their individual sounds, and showing the patterns and rules that govern spelling.

So, why does Orton-based spelling work? Well, it’s all about understanding the structure of language. By learning the building blocks of words and how they fit together, students can become more confident readers and writers. Teachers provide a systematic and multi-sensory approach to learning spelling, engaging multiple brain areas to enhance retention and understanding. This approach also emphasizes explicit instruction and repetition, ensuring that students truly grasp the spelling rules and patterns.
